The Master’s Thesis of José Almeida, Research Group on Intelligent Engineering and Computing for Advanced Innovation and Development (GECAD) of the Polytechnic Institute of Porto, was awarded second place in the REN Prize.
Thesis Title: “Optimization of Aggregators Energy Resources considering Local Markets and Electric Vehicle Penetration”
Abstract: Due to the high penetration of renewables and electric vehicles that we have been witnessing, it is necessary to manage these resources for a good operation of the electrical system. This fact becomes important, due to the uncertainty arising from this type of resource. To solve problems involving variability, methods based on computational intelligence are becoming the most suitable due to their easy implementation and low computational effort, more precisely for the case treated in this thesis, evolutionary computation algorithms. The main objective of this work was to propose a management model for several aggregator entities, for the scheduling of energy resources for the intraday context, for the next hour, starting initially from the schedule made for the following day. The optimization is done through meta-heuristics, with the objective of minimizing the costs of these entities. As such, mechanisms based on local electricity markets and risk aversion were used, which helped to further reduce costs and to be more robust in optimization (safer solutions), respectively.

Bio: José Almeida received a degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering and a Master’s in Electrical Engineering – Electrical Energy Systems from the Instituto Superior de Engenharia do Porto, Portugal, in 2019 and 2021, respectively. He is currently doing his P.h.D. in Computer Engineering – Intelligent Systems at the University of Salamanca, Spain and is a Researcher at GECAD – Intelligent Engineering and Computing Research Group for Innovation and Development, ISEP/IPP. His research interests include optimization in electric energy systems, electric vehicles, smart grids, management of distributed energy resources, and electricity markets.
